We've been getting a lot of calls lately from homeowners who are convinced their lawn is overtaken by weeds. We get it - when you look out and see all these unusual-looking stalks popping up, it's easy to assume something is wrong. But most of the time, what you're actually seeing is your grass doing exactly what it's supposed to do.
Cool-season grasses like fescue push up seed heads this time of year. It's a completely natural part of the growth cycle. The lawn isn't stressed, it isn't infected, and it doesn't need an emergency treatment. Those tall, slightly feathery-looking stalks mixed in with your turf - that's just your grass reproducing. Totally normal.
Now, that doesn't mean you should ignore everything unusual in your yard. There's a real difference between seed heads and actual weed pressure, and knowing which one you're dealing with matters a lot. If you do have broadleaf weeds or grassy weeds creeping in, the right weed control treatment at the right time makes all the difference. Treating for weeds when you're actually just seeing seed heads - that's a waste of product and money.
This is exactly the kind of thing we sort out for our customers all the time. Between our weed control treatments and our lawn fertilization programs, we stay on top of what's actually happening in each lawn so nothing gets misdiagnosed. Sometimes the best thing we can do is tell you to relax - your lawn is fine. Other times, we catch something early that would've been a bigger headache down the road.
If you're staring at your yard right now trying to figure out what you're looking at, just reach out. We're happy to take a look and give you a straight answer.
